What is this About?

I often get the same questions about why certain things are done, so this section is intended to provide some transparency and insight into league choices / decisions as well as some insight into potential league changes / adjustments.

The intention is to have this section of the site as a constant work in progress so you can always check-in and see what new ideas may be in store for the Open League.

League Format Changes
  • Pre 1996-97:
    • League-wide Round Robin
    • Wins worth 2 Points, Losses worth 1
    • A and B Pool Playoffs
    • Top 4 Playoff for A and B Flight Championship
  • 1997-98
    • League Changes to Traditional Ladder Format (A, B, and C Flights)
    • Wins worth 12, 10, and 8 Points
    • Playoffs change to flights of 6-8 teams divided by overall rank
  • 2003-04
    • Wins worth 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 Points
  • 2009-10
    • Leagues Changes to Modified Ladder Format (A, B, C1, and C2 Flights)
    • Wins worth 10, 8, 6, 6
  • 2017-18
    • League expands to A, B1, B2, C1, and C2 Flights for the first time
  • 2019-20
    • League expands to A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, and D Flights for the first time
  • 2021-22
    • League adds Regular Season Championship; Replaces A Flight Playoffs with Club Championship Playoffs
Moments in League history
  • 1996-97: League goes digital with Microsoft Excel
  • 2000-01: League launches first website
  • 2000-01: Individual Junior Players are allowed to spare / play as regular team members
  • 2001-02: League increased to 3 draws, adding a Thursday draw for the first time. Teams increase from 20-30
  • 2003-04: Full Junior teams are allowed to participate
  • 2009-10: League launches first database driven website
  • 2013-14: League changes name from "Open Competitive" to "Open League"
  • 2017-18: League expands to 4 draws and 33 teams
  • 2019-20: League hits max size at 40 teams
  • 2020-21: No Season due to COVID-19
